Pro Arts is pleased to present Friends With Karma, a group exhibition on view from February 3 to March 6 at Pro Arts’ downtown Oakland gallery. Friends With Karma brings together work by twenty-one artists selected for the exhibition based on a peer review process. The program offers a glance at some prevalent ideas and creative processes that are sparking the imagination of artists at this moment. One clear subject to emerge is the future of our cities. The twenty-seven works in the exhibition examine ideas, values and forces that are influencing urban transformation and social change in the Bay Area. There are glimpses of beauty, humor and the surreal, but also starker depictions of the social, economic, political and environmental processes of urban development. Over 115 artists participated in the program, submitting a portfolio of works via Pro Arts’ ‘blind’ jury system and then reviewing each other’s works based on the criteria of artistic merit, excellence, innovation, and relevance. The program allows insight into a moment of creative production while also encouraging artists to think critically about their own work within the scope of Bay Area art.
Pro Arts’ vision is to inspire creativity, community and change. Celebrating our 40th Anniversary in 2014, we’ve evolved into a vital artistic hub for Oakland and the Bay Area. We engage public audiences, artists, and youth in and through the arts via three key program areas: Visual Arts, Arts Education and Artist Services. Annually, Pro Arts produces over 20 exhibitions, exhibits over 600 artists, and conducts over 700 art classes for youth.
