An un-opinionated visual tale of our existence.
What do we do to make sense of our existence? We see and explain things through our own perspective, making up (or deciding) our own version of what is real.
¿Quienes SOMOS? (Who are we?)
With #SOMOS I want take a stab at tackling big philosophical questions about our human existence in a visual way. This series only scratches the theoretical surface of a very ambitious subject, hoping to spark curiosity and wonder in the casual thinker. In “translating” philosophical theories into visual art, we all become spectators of points of view that change as perspective on a issue does.
#SOMOS will create a “think-map” of questions, answers, and isolated thoughts that could help us identify connections and make sense of our shared existence as human beings.
The creative process for #SOMOS provides structure and foundation to the series:
- During the first phase of the series each piece will be based on issues addressed within Jostein Gaarder’s novel “Sophie’s World” about the history of philosophy. Other titles will serve as an inspiration as the series evolves.
- After choosing the question, I create a silkscreen that captures the essence of the topic selected, to print on 15 supports.
- As a result, through the use of different color, texture, shape, and scale, for each of the topics explored, there will be 15 different pieces, 15 perspectives.
- Over the course of the next several years, #SOMOS will complement the work of its sister series [I Am] (SOY), which tackles the question of human existence from an individual’s perspective.
